Artist management contract

Artist management contract template between the artist and the manager

For when an artist and a manager put their deal in writing: what the manager does for the career, what they can’t sign for you, the commission, the expenses, the trial period and how it ends. In English or Spanish, filled in with both parties’ details and signed online. Starting from a template uses no credits.

What the template includes

Appointment and exclusivity

Exclusive or not, for music activities in the territory you choose. Creative decisions and the final approval of every deal stay with the artist, and you can still hire your own lawyer, accountant, booking agent or publicist.

The manager’s services

Career strategy, finding and negotiating record, publishing, distribution, sync, sponsorship and live deals subject to your approval, release planning, tours, and keeping an eye on payments, statements and rights registrations.

What the manager can’t do

Sign or accept anything for you without your written OK each time, give away rights in your songs, recordings, name or image, commit you to endorse a brand, delegate the job, or act as a booking agent where the law requires a licence they don’t have.

Term, trial period and targets

Three years by default, with a six-month trial period in which either side can leave on 15 days’ notice. If the targets you write in (for example a record or publishing deal and ten paid shows) aren’t met in twelve months, the artist can end it.

Commission

20% by default, on gross income less the deductions you list (for example the direct costs of shows: musicians, crew, backline, travel and the booking agent’s commission), and only once the money has actually come in.

Excluded income

Deals signed before the contract, income from outside music, money paid to fund recordings, videos or tour support, reimbursements and loans, and income from any business the manager has a stake in.

Your money and expenses

Payments go straight to the artist’s account; if the manager collects, it is held separately and sent on within ten business days. Expenses only if documented, with a cap (USD 200 by default) above which you approve them first; no office overheads.

Reports, audit and conflicts

A monthly written report with copies of every offer and contract, records kept for three years and one audit a year. The manager declares the artists and companies they already work with and gets no commission on deals with their own businesses unless you agree.

Sunset clause and termination

After the end, a reduced commission (10% for two years by default) only on deals signed during the term, never on new deals or renewals. Termination for breach after 30 days’ notice, or immediately if they misuse your money; within 30 days they hand back documents, passwords and accounts.

When to use it

  • You are starting to work with a manager and so far everything is agreed in messages
  • You are a manager and want the commission, expenses and sunset clause settled before the first deal
  • A friend or relative is managing you and you want clear limits and a way out
  • A label or booking agency asks who represents you and on what terms

Before you sign: what to check

  • Whether the appointment is exclusive and for which territory
  • The commission percentage and what is deducted before it is calculated
  • Which income is excluded, especially deals you signed before
  • How long the trial period is and which targets let you leave early
  • The expense cap and that every payment comes to your own account
  • The sunset clause: what percentage, for how long and on which deals

Every clause explained, with typical commissions and terms: what an artist management contract says. Before signing one: how to get a music manager, and when you need one.

Frequently asked questions

Is the artist management contract template free?

Yes. On the Free plan you can use every template as often as you want; starting from one uses no credits. The Free plan includes 2 documents to sign online each month, and Pro has unlimited signatures. See the plans.

What commission does a music manager take?

The template comes with 20% as an example, a figure you change to what you agree. It is calculated on income after the deductions you list, such as the direct costs of shows, and only once the money has come in, never on income that is excluded.

Can I leave my manager before the contract ends?

Under this template, yes in three cases: freely during the trial period (six months by default, with 15 days’ notice), if the targets aren’t met in the time set, or for breach. Misusing your money or hiding a conflict of interest lets you end it immediately.

Does my manager keep earning after we split?

Only through the sunset clause: by default 10% for two years, and only on deals signed while the contract was in force. New deals, renewals and anything signed after the end pay no commission.

Can my manager sign contracts for me?

No. The template says the manager negotiates but needs your written authorisation for each deal, and the final approval is always yours. Anything they sign beyond that doesn’t bind you.
